ABSTRACT

The high energy absorption capacity together with low density of polyurethane in addition to its flexible formulation and promising performance have opened a wide range of applications in different areas, especially in petroleum and civil engineering. Additionally, because of its excellent properties, such as high elasticity, chemical stability, mechanical strength and oxidation resistance, this polymer has attracted attention in the coatings and transportation industries. Many recent studies have focused on bio-stable polyurethane, exploiting its potential for designing new composites. All these characteristics together with ease of preparation introduced this polymer as an ideal choice in many industrial applications, especially since renewable and biodegradable materials have attracted considerable attention in recent years. This chapter discusses the unique performance of polyurethane and its application in different kinds of industries. A brief description is given of the preparation methods and modifications to improve the efficiency of its properties. Moreover, novel applications of polyurethane nanocomposites and future demands have been presented.
