ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the various radiological tools that are used to characterize breast abnormalities, assist and enhance treatment options, and to perform therapeutic procedures that need imaging expertise. It discusses the role of mammography and breast ultrasound as the pillars of breast imaging. The role of MRI of the breast for assessment of locoregional disease and for solving clinicoradiological conundrums is elaborated upon. Imaging tests that are used for staging of breast cancer depending on the anatomical stage at presentation of disease is discussed. The role of the radiologist in aiding treatment procedures as well as image-guided therapeutic excision of lesions is explored. Where possible, practical imaging options for resource-constrained environments is also discussed. A flowchart with an algorithm for breast investigations is also provided.
