ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of radiotherapy in the treatment of breast cancer. It highlights the different ways that radiotherapy is used in breast cancer treatment, including as a curative therapy for noninvasive and invasive breast cancer as an adjuvant to surgery and systemic therapy, as a palliative therapy for advanced or metastatic breast cancer for symptom alleviation, and as an ablation therapy in oligometastatic breast cancer to augment systemic therapy. The chapter also provides information on different types of radiotherapy for breast cancer, such as whole-breast radiotherapy (WBR), hypofractionated WBR, post-WBR boost, and accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI). Additionally, the chapter provides specific evidence and data to support the effectiveness of radiotherapy in certain breast cancer treatments.
