ABSTRACT

Benign breast disease refers to a group of noncancerous conditions that affect the breast tissue in women causing various changes in the breast tissue, such as lumps, swelling, and tenderness, and may be accompanied by pain or discomfort. It is a common condition and affects a large percentage of women at some point in their lives. There are several types of benign breast conditions that are not cancerous but that can cause anxiety and concern for women who experience them. The causes are not entirely understood, but hormonal changes, genetics, and lifestyle factors may play a role. While benign breast diseases themselves do not increase the risk of breast cancer, some specific types of benign breast conditions can be associated with a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer. The diagnosis and management usually involve a combination of clinical evaluation, imaging studies, and sometimes a biopsy. Treatment may involve close monitoring, medication, or surgical removal, depending on the type and severity of the condition. Overall, early detection and appropriate management are essential for maintaining breast health and reducing anxiety and the risk of breast cancer.
