ABSTRACT

In this chapter, an introduction to the effect of nanostructuring in the multifunctionality of materials will be made, exploring some iconic examples. The different functionalities that can be conferred to multifunctional materials and the cross effects between functions will be described.

The state of the art considering some of the possible types of nanostructuring, including particulate and monolithic porous materials will be reviewed and the effect of pore diameter on the functionality of the materials will be discussed. The different most common types of nanoparticulate materials and their use in different multifunctional platforms, including hybrid materials and composites will be described.

These discussions are made from a broad point of view, giving rise to the treatment of the different chapters of this book.
