ABSTRACT

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) promises new type of intelligent factories; it enables connection between the physical and virtual elements via cyber physical systems. Sensors are important enablers of a cyber-physical system (CPS) as they facilitate the observation and measurement of physical elements. Intelligent factories rely on numerous sensors to perform different functions in different system resources. Sensors also require substantial amounts of information and expert knowledge to manage their activities during their lifecycle. System users need frequent access to sensor information and knowledge to take better decisions. Existing software related to sensors do not provide such knowledge for different levels of user’s experience. However, to succeed in such a system, sensors knowledge should be captured in understandable form for machines and humans, and accessible for different levels of user’s experience. This study addresses this gap by suggesting an ontology for capturing knowledge about sensors in intelligent manufacturing system.
