ABSTRACT

Nowadays some questions have been raised regarding the importance of hand drawing teaching within design education. Once, hand drawing and sketching ruled design curricula, because there simply was no alternative. The introduction of CAD, image editing, on-line search engines and other new technology advances have irrevocably changed the way we perceive and map the world around us. As a result, the status and value of hand-drawing has changed and it is important to reflect upon the functions, the teaching and the evaluation of the tools we use to express design. Drawing, within the design process, serves several functions. In this paper we intend to study this several functions and to understand the importance of the permanence of hand-drawing teaching classes in the design courses curricula despite the new technologies advances.
