ABSTRACT

There are several international systems on Energy Certification to evaluate the sustainability of buildings. Each system makes different approaches in order to achieve the desired score. However, the parameters that are considered in the assessment of their environmental impact vary, as there are also differences in the understanding of what sustainability is. Although the aim is to meet established benchmarks and to introduce important aspects of sustainable construction, this assessment is not always scientific and does not attain essential objectives. As a methodology we refer to a European (BREEAM) and American (LEED) system. By comparing the items in which the evaluation is objectified, we can better understand its strengths and weaknesses. Examples include three university buildings: one in Europe - Central Saint Martins in London, UK and the other in the USA - Sloan School of Management, MIT, Boston and The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in Durham.
