ABSTRACT

Buildings are responsible for 40% of the greenhouse gas emission in the world. Sustainability in building design and construction is an ideal solution to mitigate climate change and solve housing shortage issues. Due to the high costs of the building industry in Sudan compared to the low GDP per capita, sustainable building materials and technology must be applied. The main objective of the research paper is to provide an overview of the sustainability concept and apply the method of Life Cycle Assessment for analysing building construction and materials in Sudan. The environmental impact of two typical buildings is compared. The first case study represents a sustainable, low cost, traditional building technology, while the second one represents a modern building type.
