ABSTRACT

Chronic Non-Communicable Disorders (NCDs) have become the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Unhealthy lifestyle is considered to be an important cause of NCDs. Chronic respiratory problems such as asthma has been highly widespread over the last three decades. Pippali Rasyana is mentioned as one of the best formulations in the management of respiratory problems and disease of kapha and vata imbalance in Ayurveda texts. A study carried on for a period of nine months that was done to compare a group of patients treated by physiotherapy with a group of patients who received yogic training showed the yogic group performed significantly better on objective tests of exercise tolerance. Yogic breathing techniques help to reduce the bronchospasm by decreasing tone bronchial smooth muscle tone. Yogic breathing may help in improving the strength and efficiency of pulmonary muscles, which can help in the development of lung volumes and capacities.
