ABSTRACT

Allergy and immunology is one of the smaller medical specialties in the United States. Many primary care physicians care for patients with mild allergies and asthma. After completing an allergy fellowship most individuals will enter into the clinical practice of allergy. A few individuals stay on at university medical centers to do research as well as patient care. Most often newly trained allergists will join an existing group of allergists who have an established allergy practice. Allergists in the United States see a variety of medical conditions. The most common are asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticarial, food allergy, eosinophilic esophagitis and immunodeficiency. In the recent past there have been many changes in the clinical practice of allergy. Allergic rhinitis is found throughout the United States. Patients can be affected with year round or perennial allergic rhinitis or they may have seasonal allergic rhinitis which occurs primarily in the spring and fall of each year.
