ABSTRACT
Educators and students should recognize the ethical dimension of technology as a major factor in their career development, rather than accepting technology as a given. This chapter aims to address the question of the relationship between BIM and ethics. It considers the ethics expected of those working on the built environment. Does BIM affect ethics, and does ethics affect BIM? It takes as an example the impact that technology could have on achieving social, environmental, and economic sustainability goals as an indication of where technology can change ethics. It also considers how the current generation may use ethical considerations to accelerate the shift from BIM towards collaborative BIM. If the digital twins of the built environment become a reality, then professionals will need to justify their use and the ethical basis of the automated decisions being made.
