ABSTRACT
BIM brings a paradigm change to the construction industry. Implementing building information modelling technology requires new ways of thinking and working. In this chapter, we explain what BIM is, how we work with BIM, and what value working with BIM provides, and we offer an overview of essential BIM terminology. First, we outline the basic concepts and principles that underlie BIM processes and technologies, including topics related to object-oriented representation, digital prototypes, integration and collaboration, and information environments. Second, with reference to the ISO 19650 standard, we describe and explain the key processes, stages, and essential methods and tools related to building information management. Third, we discuss salient and apparent benefits of BIM to owners and operators, design professionals, and construction contractors and builders. Finally, we define and explain the key BIM jargon. Students of architecture, civil engineering, building construction, facilities management, and other disciplines of the construction industry, and their instructors, should find it most relevant.
