ABSTRACT

Dogs, especially purpose-bred beagles, are used in research and testing of pharmaceuticals worldwide. Refinement of their husbandry, care, and use in scientific procedures, to minimize pain and distress and improve animal welfare, will ultimately benefit the science derived from them. In this chapter, we first review the behavioral biology, sensory capabilities, natural history, and domestication of dogs. We then give advice on appropriate accommodation, environmental enrichment, social groupings, feeding strategies, handling and restraint, and positive reinforcement training to promote the behavioral health of dogs in the laboratory, with supporting references and resources. Implementation of the guidance in this chapter, by technicians, veterinarians, researchers, and other staff involved in the management of dogs, will improve dog well-being, and help to address the 3Rs principles of replacement, reduction and refinement).
