ABSTRACT

In Western psychology theory, the components of emotions can basically be interpreted in three different ways. However, emotion is only a very small portion under the construct of the mental consciousness. This paper argues that Xuanzang’s Cheng Weishi Lun presents a more comprehensive “Emotional Component Model.” It divides the emotional phenomena within the conscious mind into thirty-seven mental components and then consolidates them into an examinable, dissectible, and verifiable factual model. This paper further argues that this “Emotional Component Model” can be utilized as an early tool for the management of emotions including the establishment of proper judgement of values and cognitive choice in order to avoid emotional pitfalls. Not only can this psychological classification model from Xuanzang help enhance the management of human emotions, but it can even be used as a tool to rectify deeper humanistic consciousness and to further explore and establish a complete and detailed study about the psychological structure of life as well as to uncover the truth of life.
