ABSTRACT

In 1968, Ommaya was credited for classifying CSF leaks into primary/idiopathic and secondary types. Prior to this classification, a British neurosurgeon, Cairns, had classified CSF leaks into four subtypes: acute traumatic, delayed traumatic, spontaneous, and postoperative. Leaks have also more recently been classified into spontaneous, traumatic, and idiopathic types. Also based on the site of the leak in the cranial skull base, they may be anterior, middle, or posterior cranial fossa.
