ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with free convection of incompressible Newtonian fluids in porous media. It is presumed that the reader is familiar with the basics of convection in porous media. A non-exhaustive survey of the literature on free convection in porous media is presented mainly to show the progress in the field and also to highlight the gaps. Suggestions as to how some of these gaps might be filled are put forward. The chapter skips over some details and instead focuses on the application of some techniques that can be used to simplify analyzing complex practical problems. Some examples are presented to demonstrate the implementation of the proposed techniques to obtain reasonably accurate results. Furthermore, samples of the obtained results, compared to those obtained from more sophisticated and involved solution procedures, are presented.
