ABSTRACT

The etiology of the fungal keratitis is broad and diverse. In a Mexican case series the most frequent causative microorganisms of fungal corneal ulcers were F. solani and F. oxysporum. The etiological agents of fungal keratitis due to Fusarium spp. are fungi in the environment, in air, water, decaying organic matter, wood, plants, vegetables, straw and grains. Fungal keratitis can occur at any age and sex, although it is more common in adult men, perhaps due to occupational issues. Fusarium keratitis has been observed in various animals such as horses, cows, dogs, farm chickens and rabbits. Fungal keratitis especially due to Fusarium spp., is an important cause of visual impairment and blindness, that can easily be prevented with many options like mechanical protection against traumatisms in groups at risk, such as threshers, gardeners, etc., should be used. It is also known that some fungi such as Fusarium produce several mycotoxins such as fumonisin B1, which cause greater cellular cytotoxicity.
