ABSTRACT

The article deals with the creation of a 3D model of the historical Vltava valley from old maps within the project of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The Vltava, probably the most popular Czech river, has been greatly influenced by the construction of dams in the middle of the 20th century. From old maps, it is possible to reconstruct the historic valley even in the areas flooded with water. In the testing area of the Slapy Reservoir, the possibility of automatic vectorization of contour lines from the State Map 1:5000-derived (SMO-5) and the creation of a 3D model in ArcGIS software was tested. Because we are working with a very interesting cultural and historical site, the goal of the project is not only to create the model, but also to present it in a web environment for broad public audience. Together with the 3D model, it is possible to present flooded areas, including lost settlements. Thanks to rich photographic documentation that can be linked to the created model, it will be possible to create a complex information system of the historic Vltava River.
