ABSTRACT

Analysis of sediments provides environmentally significant information. Their chemical characterization is needed to understand the natural and anthropogenic influence on the bodies of water. In the present study, sediment collected from Hornad river in east of Slovakia is subjected to mineral analysis using FTIR technique. FTIR spectroscopy is a useful additional method for characterization of functional groups in the compounds of sediments. The paper deals with the study of sediment quality from five sampling sites from Hornad River using of XRF, XRD and FTIR analyses. It was found that analysed sediments contain mainly silicates and carbonates. On the basis of chemical analysis using the XRF method, it is possible to state that the limit values stipulated by the Slovak legislation have not been exceeded.
