ABSTRACT

Measurements of radioactivity in some common building materials in the second biggest town in Slovakia are reported, together with calculations of the gamma-ray exposure from walls and floors made of different materials. The building is used in calculations of the mean exposure inside concrete, brick and plaster. The monitoring of the concentration of radioactive elements in the building materials as well as the levels of radioactivity emitted by these materials in order to assess the radiation risks to human health is very important because most of the population spends about 80% of their time inside buildings. The purpose of this contribution is to evaluate the natural radioactivity in samples taken in a historical building in Košice.
