ABSTRACT

Aircrew undergo comprehensive initial examination prior to flying training and regular periodic medical examinations. Purpose of the aircrew medical is medical assessment of an individual’s ability to fly safely, and to identify those who are at increased risk of incapacitation during the relevant period of certification subsequent to the examination. Medicals are conducted by authorised aviation medical examiners. It is recognised that untargeted testing and physical examination alone is of limited value; the number of abnormalities detected in aircrew medicals is usually very low, but occasionally asymptomatic disease is identified, and it is an opportunity for health promotion. Aeromedical examiners (AMEs) are doctors with specialist aviation medicine training. For civilian AMEs, approval type determines which class of certificate they can assess, based on the training and experience level of the AME. Every doctor has their own routine for performing a medical examination. Standard forms usually employed to gather correct information.
