ABSTRACT

Anthropometry is study of human body size. Certain measurements are highly important in aviation. Measurements need to be repeated for consistency. Anthropometry informs aircraft design and selection of crew. Anthropometry is a key aspect of ergonomics and essential for designers to match equipment, workstations and working environments to human users. Anthropometry considers the wide variations in human form to ensure that individuals fit into the environment in which they will be working and can operate all of equipment requiring operation within that workspace. Anthropometric data may be used to describe a population, or an individual within a population: Population data can be analysed to assess the central tendency, typically the mean value for each parameter, usefulness of mean value is limited in aerospace medicine, and means are used to derive the percentile range of measurements within which proportions of subject population will be found.
