ABSTRACT

Assessment of the cabin crew is to ensure that the individual is medically, physically and psychologically fit for the role and should consider: standards of health necessary to carry out the required tasks safely and effectively, and positive and negative impacts of the job on the employee’s health and well-being. Crew must be alert on the ground prior to boarding, ensuring that all areas of the plane are secure, with no potential threats left on board by previous passengers, maintenance or cleaning staff. The crew must be able to assist passengers throughout the flight with their needs, within the bounds of sensible manual handling guidelines. Cabin crew require aeromedical advice to ensure appropriate vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis; advice on preparing for flights, lifestyle, personal safety and security. Assessment of fitness is usually required; format often mandated by regulatory authorities. Medical examinations or assessments are repeated periodically; usually a requirement for reassessment after a period of unfitness or decreased medical fitness.
