ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces readers to the freeze-drying process of pharmaceutical products. Process objectives and constraints are presented and discussed, as well as the equipment that carries out the process. Then, mathematical modeling, a very powerful tool that may assist freeze-drying practitioners in the stage of process development, is introduced. Finally, open issues and the most recent advancements in the field, which are the topics of the other chapters in the book, are introduced.
