ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive review on the role of Smart Meters (SM) in Smart-Cities’ Grid (SG) with an extensive focus on the power quality (PQ) and power reliability (PR) applications. It explains the review papers presented in literature that are associated with the usage of SMs in SGs. The chapter provides an overview on the key enablers for achieving a successful advanced metering infrastructure for SGs, It compares SM related literature considering different metrics in the domain of PQ and PR respectively. The chapter describes the open research gaps for directing future research. Electrical power is considered to be one of the essential factors for the development of societies through improving life quality. However, the conditions in the power industry are changing as electricity demand and renewable integration increase. Wireless Fidelity is another communication technology that is largely used in homes and business areas.
