ABSTRACT

A photovoltaic (PV) system consist in PV modules made of semiconductors as the main building blocks. The solar energy represents a promising alternative to the conventional energy resources. The conversion of solar energy into electric power is realized using a PV system based on PV cells arranged in modules. The conversion efficiency is related to the solar irradiance reaching the PV cell surface, the temperature and quality of the PV cell and the connections between PV modules and cell. The PV cells are connected in series in order to obtain adequate output voltage and form the PV module. The PV installations can be classified in four major types: off-grid such as a standalone roof or ground-based systems, off-grid distributed such as industrial installations or power plants, grid-centralized such as large power plants and grid distributed such as roof or ground mounted small installations. The efficiency of a PV system in time is influenced by the optimum performance of its components.
