ABSTRACT

Viruses are most important cause of loss in many vegetable crops. Usually, complex relationship between the virus, host plant, and the vector creates trouble in formulation of efficient management system. Characterization of causal viruses and understanding their epidemiology is the key to assess the severity and economic impact of the diseases and efficient management. The upshot of interactions among virus, host, vector, and environmental dynamics decides the nature of epidemics. Each epidemic can be considered a distinct pathosystem in which each of the components contributes too. Characterization of virus associated with the different pathosystems and their vectors is the basis for developing management strategies. In the perspective of virus infection in vegetable crop, we categorized 11 pathosystem which has different modes of infection. Each pathosystem has been discussed based on modes of transmission and dissemination viz. seed or vegetative propagules carrying virus, insect vector, nematodes, and fungal transmission. On the basis of spread mode in various pathosystem, different management strategies applicable are discussed.
