ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the framework for future design of ventilated packaging for optimal performance in the cold chain based on integrated multi-parameter assessment. Packaging allows quick handling and marketing throughout distribution, protecting the commodity by reducing mechanical loads, such as drop, impact, vibration and compression loads. The type and purposes of packaging boxes are numerous as there are products to put in them and depends on the handling requirement. Palletization is stacking of group of packaging boxes on standard sized base structure called pallet. Application of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) in the analysis of packaging box aims to understand the airflow through and the accompanying heat exchange processes of stacked produce. Discrete CFD model includes the detailed geometry of the various parts of the system: individual fruit, packaging box and its vent hole designs, the package arrangement and orientation and the configuration of the cooling system.
