ABSTRACT

Films and coatings are samples of the new trends in the packaging technology. Smart packaging is an emerging area, which includes a number of functionalities, depending on the product being packaged, including food, beverage, pharmaceutical and various types of health and household products. In 2014, a colorimetric mixed-pH dye-based indicator was identified for the development of intelligent packaging, as a ‘chemical barcode’ for real-time monitoring of skinless chicken-breast spoilage. Semiconductors and metal-based nanoparticles can be used effectively in many areas, such as biosensors, sensor-related products and combining with packaging materials. A smart packaging system was studied, which is based on a colorimetric method and included a polyaniline film. Intelligent packaging should not be confused with active packaging. Active packaging is enhancing of the protection function of traditional food packaging and is so designed so that it includes a component that permits the absorption or release of substances into/from the packaged food or the environment surrounding the food.
