ABSTRACT

The teaching and learning of music has significantly changed in this millennium. Surprisingly, some music educators are uninformed about these changes in music teaching and learning. Most of them are intellectually deficient in this regard. The way they taught twenty years ago is still the same as the way they teach today. They all believe that the approach they used in the past can be used in the present and will always be relevant in the future. This can be accounted a main reason as to why increasing number of music students are still struggling to develop basic musical abilities despite the fact that students of today are born into the age of technology. This paper examines the differences between the conventional music learners and teachers and the 21st century music learners and teachers, taking into consideration the historical perspective and philosophy of music education in Nigeria.
