ABSTRACT

The Suzuki method put forward by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki tends to be implemented in violin and orchestra learning. However, in Indonesia this method is seldom implemented in the country particularly in traditional music activities in schools. The SMAN 2 (State Senior High School 2) is the only school in Samarinda, East Kalimantan to have the Kutai people’s traditional music and extracurricular activity called Tingkilan, taught with the Suzuki method. The purpose of the research was to discover and then describe how implementation of the Suzuki method within the SMAN 2 Samarinda Tingkilan musical extracurricular practice affected the students. In order to acquire accurate data, the researcher utilized a descriptive, qualitative approach working with research subjects such as the music coach, the counselor and the students within the Tingkilan music extracurricular activity. The data collection techniques implemented were observation, interview, documentary and data validation through triangulation.
