ABSTRACT

Music education can support youngsters in their moral and citizenship development. Music education can focus on: For the relationship of moral development and music education in particular the non-technical cultural understanding and creating new meanings are important. The challenge for music education is to improve the focus on a critical-democratic citizenship education. For improving really the contribution of music education to citizenship development teacher education should pay more attention to the link between music education and moral and citizenship development. For many youngsters music is strongly linked with their identity. With their musical preferences youngsters show who they are. Often youngsters strongly identify with musicians, in particular pop musicians. All student teachers should learn about citizenship education and how they can include this in their teaching. They should learn to reflect on processes of meaning giving in music education, on what they think is good citizenship and how they can work on it in their lessons.
