ABSTRACT

Senjang is an artistic medium that employs pantun bersahutan, a poetic form in which two people or pairs of people answer back the lyrics which are sung in reply. Senjang can contain advice or criticism, express happiness or describe a particular event. The purpose of this research was to explore the educational values that are conveyed through the art of Senjang in Sekayu city, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The data were collected through observation, interviews and document studies. The results showed that the lyrics conveyed the educational values of cooperation, discipline and responsibility. They reflect wider social values about the importance of education, knowledge, religion, community, and culture that can help to shape and improve the character of the nation.
