ABSTRACT

This study aimed to identify the effects of peer group behavior on interest in learning gamelan and other traditional arts among teenagers in Yogyakarta City. A survey was conducted at three senior high schools in the Special Territory of Yogyakarta. A Likert scale questionnaire was used to collect data from 117 students who were selected using the area random sampling technique. The Manova procedure was employed to analyze the data. The results showed that there is a positive and significant effect of peer group behavior on interest in learning gamelan, but no peer group effect on attention to the traditional art of gamelan. This indicates that the closer the participants felt towards their peers, the higher was their interest in learning the traditional art of gamelan.
