ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explain Malay song forms in Kuansing, Kampar and Rokan Hulu regencies, Riau Province. This study is an in-depth and detailed research into the form of Malay songs compiled by artists from the province. Five songs were selected as representative of Riau Province: ‘Panjek-panjek Tabalusui’, ‘Menganyam’, ‘Nosib Pamotong’, ‘Baghandu’, and ‘Tuanku Tambusai’. The research shows that the characteristic form of such Malay songs has: 1) repetitive patterns, 2) a variety of motifs, 3) two phrases, 4) a variety of themes, especially about phenomena that occur in the local communit.
