ABSTRACT

En route gathered data is analysed of overtaking during clear-out after a collision has blocked a two-lane highway. Overtaking could occur in clumps explicable by staged releasing of platoons at a collision site. Drivers overwhelmingly used purpose built passing lanes for overtaking. No significant increase of dangerous/illegal overtakings was observed in clear-out versus ‘normal’ driving conditions. In the ‘waiting-in-the-queue-for-clear-out-to-begin-stage’, significantly more apparent queue jumping and highway leaving occurred in the first twenty minutes of a one hour wait. When the queue begins to stop-and-go prior to clear-out no queue hopping was observed. It could not be concluded that collision induced delay increased dangerous/illegal overtaking.
