ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to determine the potential effectiveness of a PC-based simulator for the training of operational command skills within the Fire Service. The performance of participants undertaking an operational command training course using the simulator was compared with performance using a current training method. Evaluation was by means of both self and external assessment, using the Fire Sendee’s seven key functions of operational command, and two measures of overall command performance. Results showed that participants rated their performance significantly lower on three of the command functions as well as on their overall command performance when using the simulator. The low ratings on the simulator appeared to have originated from the participants not having the ability to manipulate and control high level command activities. Recommendations were made regarding the training requirements for specific levels of operational command to be mapped onto the simulator.
