ABSTRACT

This study calculates a subgrade reaction–pile displacement relationship using a finite element method for three-pile groups for which the properties of soil in proximity to the pile differ from the properties of the surrounding soil. Overall, pile group coefficient tended to decrease when stiffness of the soil in proximity to the piles increased. Impact of the stiffness of the soil in proximity to the piles on the ratio of subgrade reaction per pile was limited. As the stiffness of the soil in proximity to the piles increased compared to the surrounding soil, the ratio of the subgrade reaction at the front and back against the overall subgrade reaction also decreased. Further, the impact of shear resistance in the side soil tended to increase.
