ABSTRACT

Sheep producers have a wide array of management tools to increase production efficiency. Scientific and technological advances have put new tools in the hands of producers to use along with many well-tested age-old practices. Although subjective and fairly imprecise, condition scoring is more useful than weighing sheep to estimate body condition because ewes within a flock may differ considerably in frame size, and ewes of the same weight might be quite different in condition. Adding cattle to follow sheep in the system makes it even better since the grazing patterns are complementary and the time period between ewe and lamb grazing is increased. The length of flushing necessary to increase ovulation rate is dependent upon initial body condition. Young animals, especially lambs, are more susceptible to intestinal parasites than are mature animals. Grazing weaned lambs ahead of yearlings or ewes in a rotational pattern is useful in reducing infection of the lambs.
