ABSTRACT

Profitable sheep production in a dry climate depends on a number of factors, but it is most directly influenced by the amount and quality of lamb and wool that can be produced per ewe from the resources that are available. The management of the resources, which vary from ranch to ranch, provides sheep producers with daily challenges to enhance their opportunities for profit. Range management is an important key to profitable sheep production. The development of a sound sheep-breeding and selection program is another of the keys to profitable sheep production in a dry climate. Some sheepmen in dry climates may wish to purchase replacement females and crossbreed for market-lamb production. A planned health program must accompany a successful sheep production enterprise in a dry climate. The control of internal and external parasites is important to successful sheep production in a dry climate.
