ABSTRACT

The number of goats in South Africa has varied from 5 million to 7 million. Most of these were meat-type goats. The meat goat is a traditional favorite with nomadic people, especially in developing countries. In South Africa, most meat goats are owned by people of the black tribes. The interests of the Angora industry are promoted by several organizations. The Angora Goat Ram-Breeders' Association strives to improve the quality of breeding material. To improve the quality and quantity of mohair, Angora goats are being graded and selected according to breed characteristics and an Angora Score Card, This is mainly a subjective evaluation that takes into account both conformation and mohair characteristics such as length, fineness, density, and character and style. Meat goats in South Africa are sometimes classified into five groups: the common boer goat, the longhaired boer goat, the polled boer goat, the Bantu goat, and the improved boer goat.
