ABSTRACT

Karl Menger was bom in 1902 in Austria. He was educated in Vienna (a student of Hans Hahn), and later taught there. As a prominent member of the “Vienna Circle”, he showed an interest in logic, philosophy, didactics, and economics, in addition to his work in mathematics. Later, he came to the Illinois Institute of Technology. Menger is one of the originators of the ideas of topological dimension (other, independent, originators are Brouwer, Urysohn, and Lebesgue). See [13] for a brief summary of Menger’s work.
