ABSTRACT

The grain industry is an important part of the US economy. The grain marketing systems in Canada and the European Community are described and analyzed because they have a significant impact on world grain markets. Food grains are those used for direct human consumption and generally include wheat and rice. Feed grains, or coarse grains, are used primarily for livestock feed and include corn, barley, sorghum, oats, and rye. Importers have complained loudly about the poor quality of US grain. Changes in the inspection service for export grain as well as grain grades and standards have been made in part to solve these problems. Perhaps more than any other product, grains and oilseeds must compete in a global marketplace. Grain marketing is defined as the performance of all business activities that coordinate the flow of goods and services from grain producers to consumers and users.
