ABSTRACT

Since 1967, Falling Number (FN) has remained at a very high and uniform level, with some exceptions. When the falling number method was introduced in 1964 as a standard analysis for price determination in wheat and rye there was an immediate need for information about optimum harvest date from the FN point of view. For this purpose an investigation was started in order to find out if it would be possible to produce FN prognoses. Especially in the beginning of the period of ripeness it is necessary to dry the samples before grinding and FN determination. The drying temperature is maintained at about 50°C. In a single so called "prognosis" the grain species, variety, locality, degree of ripeness, water content, FN, and the tendency of the FN are metioned. The varieties grown and the farming procedures must be typical for the district. For instance this includes sowing date and amount and mode of fertilizing.
