ABSTRACT

The Prime Wheat Association is an organisation of 4,000 wheatgrower members in Northern and Western New South Wales. The environmental conditions are conducive to the production of high quality wheats and together with varietal control, objective assessment of wheat quality enables segregation of grades at the point of receival ex farm. The use of Hagberg Falling Number equipment has only gone part of the way towards solving the problem of field assessment of weather damage. Although the impetus for the objective assessment of weather damage emanated from the growers, problems assoiated with consistency in testing combined with the resultant financial significance has reduced the creditability of this type of operation amongst many farmers. The successful implementation of this pilot scheme in 1983/1984, in operational terms, has created a greater awareness throughout the industry of the need for the objective assessment of weather damage.
