ABSTRACT
The earliest reference to Indian ants is traceable to Susrutha the renowned ancient physician (Ayyar 1939), who classified ants (pipilica) into six groups, based primarily upon their economic importance. However, systematic study and documentation of Indian Ants only began during the last century (Sykes 1936; Kirby, 1837; Emery 1981).
