ABSTRACT

Atta insularis Guérin is an insect whose presence in Cuba dates back to 1492 when the island was discovered. Years later, Fernandez de Oviedo (1535) reported “damages” to isolated orange trees by “harmful ants.” It was not until 1949 that Bruner and Valdés made the first biological observations of this species in the Agronomical Research Station of Santiago de las Vegas, Havana province. In the last 40 years, the results of different researchers (Alayo 1974, Pintera 1983, Pintera and Zorrilla 1981, Pérez et al 1977, 1979, 1981) have been reported regarding not only the biology but also emphasizing its control.
