ABSTRACT
Many plant species escape attack by leaf-cutting ants. Several factors play an important role in whether or not ants cut a plant’s leaves. In addition to physical factors, the presence of secondary compounds toxic to ants and/or their symbiotic fungus is of fundamental importance. Depending on what substance is present, the plant may act as a repellent, a deterrent, or as a toxicant.
