ABSTRACT

The mass rearing of insects for the industrial screening of insect control products requires insects of consistent quality to ensure good reproduction of test results. The economic aspects of materials, methods, and labor are also very important. Various researchers demonstrated that the action of an insecticide may also be affected by the nature of the host plant. A major problem in the use of artificial diet is the elimination of bacteria and fungi. The most important conclusion to be drawn from our trials is that noctuid species such as S. littoralis, reared on artificial diet, consistently produce representative and seasonally constant results for the selection of products. The economic and methodological advantages of rearing insects on artificial nutrients are in no way gained at the expense of the relevance of screening results.
